To Fly or Not to Fly
A Christian Question

by Jalal Abualrub (
www.islamlife.com)

During my debate with David Wood, he repeatedly mentioned the Prophet's Hadeeth about the fly, where the Prophet ordered that if a fly falls in one’s pot of food or drink, to completely submerge the fly in the pot and then discard the fly, “Because one of its wings carries a cure and the other carries a disease.“ (Bukhari).

Christians dwell on this Hadeeth, not because they scientifically disproved it, but because science has not approved it yet.  I told Mr. Wood that I and he are not scientists, so I referred him and the audience to my website where I had a few articles on the Hadeeth of the fly.  Some of the audience laughed.  I did not laugh.  If someone came before the age of dinosaur discoveries said that in the past, there were giant animals living on the earth, they would have laughed at him as well.   Here is an interesting article (http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s689400.htm) sent to me by Br. Bassam Zawadi.  Read it and wonder why Muslim scientists are so drowned in something else rather than taking the initiative to make this research instead of waiting until the Kuffar do it.   We complain to Allah that the people who have the truth are asleep and the people who are on utter misguidance are active calling to their false religion and paying effort to do so.  Islam will win regardless of how weak and divided or strong and united Muslims are.

The new buzz on antibiotics

Tuesday, 1 October 2002

The surface of flies is the last place you would expect to find antibiotics, yet that is exactly where a team of Australian researchers is concentrating their efforts.

Working on the theory that flies must have remarkable antimicrobial defences to survive rotting dung, meat and fruit, the team at the Department of Biological Sciences, Macquarie University, set out to identify those antibacterial properties manifesting at different stages of a fly’s development.

"Our research is a small part of a global research effort for new antibiotics, but we are looking where we believe no-one has looked before,” said Ms Joanne Clarke, who presented the group’s findings at the Australian Society for Microbiology Conference in Melbourne this week. The project is part of her PhD thesis.

The scientists tested four different species of fly: a house fly, a sheep blowfly, a vinegar fruit fly and the control, a Queensland fruit fly which lays its eggs in fresh fruit. These larvae do not need as much antibacterial compound because they do not come into contact with as much bacteria.

Flies go through the life stages of larvae and pupae before becoming adults. In the pupae stage, the fly is encased in a protective casing and does not feed. "We predicted they would not produce many antibiotics," said Ms Clarke.

They did not. However the larvae all showed antibacterial properties (except that of the Queensland fruit fly control).

As did all the adult fly species, including the Queensland fruit fly (which at this point requires antibacterial protection because it has contact with other flies and is mobile).

Such properties were present on the fly surface in all four species, although antibacterial properties occur in the gut as well. "You find activity in both places," said Ms Clarke.

"The reason we concentrated on the surface is because it is a simpler extraction.”

The antibiotic material is extracted by drowning the flies in ethanol, then running the mixture through a filter to obtain the crude extract.

When this was placed in a solution with various bacteria including E.coli, Golden Staph, Candida (a yeast) and a common hospital pathogen, antibiotic action was observed every time.

"We are now trying to identify the specific antibacterial compounds," said Ms Clarke. Ultimately these will be chemically synthesised.

Because the compounds are not from bacteria, any genes conferring resistance to them may not be as easily transferred into pathogens. It is hoped this new form of antibiotics will have a longer effective therapeutic life.

It is interesting to note that David Wood himself admits that this argument could be easily refuted by Muslims (so why does he put it forth?)....

Muhammad’s rule for living is unwise, and his reason for proclaiming it is false. But notice that this command isn’t said to have come from a divine revelation. Muhammad, then, may have simply been passing on an old wives’ tale that he had appropriated at some point during his life. Taken alone, this doesn’t cast much doubt on his prophethood

This is because these people dismiss Muhammad's clearly established Prophethood any way they can, while using the same arguments they dismiss to support the inspiration of the Bible. When it comes to prophesies, they explain these away with regards to Prophet Muhammad, such as saying soothsayers may say true prophesies and claiming the Prophet said it, which he didn’t. But, when it comes to the Bible, it is divine because of prophesies that came true, i.e., they explain these in a way to make them come true even if the prophesies do not like it. The Jews always refute what Christians say regarding OT prophesies proving NT personalities. The Jews should know, they wrote the OT with their own hands. For miracles, Christians dismiss Muhammad's miracles, such as the biggest miracle any Prophet was given, the splitting of the moon, which I proved during the debate, by saying that Islamic resources are not reliable, yet, using these same Islamic resources to prove Muhammad is not a prophet. Even when they pick forged stories, they do not mention the whole story. White, for instance, criticized me for not using a portion of a verse that also says Jesus is lord as if it is similar to what they do when they cut a Hadeeth in half and use only what seems to be the negative part of it. But, lord is not synonymous to God in any language. People do not call their landlords land-gods. But when it comes to Jesus, Christians prove his divinity based on the miracles he performed. They know very well that they do not even know who wrote the Bible. This is why I feel that debates are not really a good way of D`awah. Dissipating the Christian arguments in writing is a far better method. I usually have so much fun dissipating the arguments Christians make against Islam, because their arguments are so shallow and ignorant. Now, if scientists start looking into extracting antibiotics from flies to treat diseases, then how could Muhammad have known this even exists during his time? He must have heard it from his grandmother, who was very dead when he was born. You see the hypocrisy of people who know in their heart Muhammad is true? I seek refuge with Allah from being blinded in the heart.
